What exactly is an ecommerce website and how can it benefit my business?

An ecommerce site is basically a website that you can use to sell your products from. Wether you sell tangible items or digital items that you want to let buyers download automatically after they have paid there is an ecommerce solution suited for you.

I try to use existing ecommerce solutions whenever possible so that the overall cost to you, the customer is kept as low as possible. There are already hundreds of excellent ecommerce scripts out there which have been tested extensively and I have found that, unless you’re after something really bespoke the best option is to use a tried and tested script.

Most ecommerce solutions offer a selection of different payment gateways so that you can select the best one for you. A lot of people choose to go with the gateway offered by a company they have an offline merchant account with as they will often offer an improved rate if you do this. Different companies have different pricing models so estimating your sales volume and average sale prices can help see which gateway will be the best value for you.
